Brisbane Nutritionist Katie King
Thanks for dropping by to learn a bit more about me. Let’s be clear on this from the start. I do have a balanced and reasonable approach to health. I don’t eat or live a perfect lifestyle and realistically I know you won’t either. And that’s ok. We are doing the best we can and that’s what matters. I am not affiliated with any eating styles such as paleo, low carb, vegetarianism, vegan or anything else you can think if. I like aspects of all of these programs but I eat for me and I want to help you eat for you. We are ALL different; we have different lifestyles, genes and health conditions and being a good clinical nutritionist is about helping you work out your ideal nutrition.
I have a Bachelor of Health Science in Nutritional Medicine so my technical title is ‘Nutritional Medicine Practitioner’ (NMP). This year I bought my own clinic, Step into Health where I work with other allied health professionals who share my passions. I don’t just do diet. I consider the whole you. Your lifestyle, nutritional deficiencies, genetic background and past health history. I do prescribe supplements. I can’t do my job without these. These supplements are not like the ones you get in the supermarket; they come with a script and are high quality, highly concentrated nutritional and herbal medicine formulas. They are not necessary for all my clients, but when dealing with serious health issues they are.
What can an NMP / Nutritionist actually help with? Well we look at specific conditions and presentations in the body and consider what nutrients and foods are required to assist the healing process. We work around current drug protocols and work to optimise your health so that you will be well again soon. In saying that, if you are already in good health and you simply want to come and see me for some basic nutrition advice that’s fine too :). The type of work I am doing in clinic currently includes:
-Working with kids and parents to optimize nutrition and supplementation as they navigate diagnoses including ADD. Or to build immunity due to ongoing sickness – all those bugs they pick up at school!
-Working with athletes to optimize recovery, say no to bonking and get rid of runner’s trots. See the athlete’s page for more information.
-Working with people suffering serious digestive complaints: IBS, IBD, reflux, Crohn’s Disease, Diverticulitis and the likes.
-Seeing as I have established some solid connections with psychologists of late I am seeing presentations of anxiety, depression and eating disorders. Please keep in mind that the neurotransmitters in our brain that control how we feel on a mental level are actually produced from amino acids. So yes food is a really central component of correcting mental health issues. And an area I find both fascinating and rewarding. You can read more about that here in my post on Nutrition and Mental Health.
-Assisting autoimmune suffer’s to optimize their diet and nutritional intake to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life.
-Assisting to optimize blood sugars in Diabetics (1 and 2) and to normalize liver health in fatty liver disease.
-Assisting women with hormonal issues. Again, hormones are produced from food (protein and fats really) so nutrition is key.
One day I plan to specialize. But for now I am taking on all of the knowledge I gain as I work with my clients. I am research focused with a high regard for evidence based practice. I tend to use some of my recent experiences as inspiration for blogs so check them out here, although I have not had a lot of time to write lately. This isn’t all I treat, but it gives you a good idea.
I can organize pathology testing and functional health testing if necessary. Please contact me if you wish to discuss your own health and book a consultation. I look forward to working with you. My clinic number is 07 3398 1977.
When I am not practicing I am cooking. Or reading. Or eating. Or exercising. That pretty much sums things up.
Everything in balance. Including balance itself.
